ARIES – 3D Shape Classification

At Astraea Software, ARIES – 3D Shape Classification is one of the first AI products developed by our company together with ARIES – 3D Synthesis. This state-of-art solution is designed to enchance your designing and production efficient processes.

We are excited to introduce one of our ARIES Series products: 3D Shape Classification. This innovative solution leverages advanced AI technology to accurately identify and categorize 3D shapes, enhancing efficiency and precision in various applications.

Training Model

Bolt’s AI model training uses supervised data labeled with a predefined class name (such as Round Head Minus), as shown in the figure below.
In the 3D AI model, the features of the bolt head are extracted and trained by the 3D CNN for each class.

Dataset

For our 3D classification, we utilize three datasets: bolts, pipes, and manifolds. The bolt dataset includes 7 classes, the pipe dataset has 4 classes, and the manifold dataset comprises 3 classes, totaling over 1,000 dataset 3D.

In our demo, we provide pre-prepared data for classification, sourced from evaluation or unknown datasets. This means that the training model has not previously encountered the data provided, ensuring an unbiased classification process.

At the demo site, you can try AI models that classify bolts, pipes, and manifold shapes. Bolts are classified according to the shape of the bolt head, pipes identify the number of branches, straight pipes, and curved pipes from the entire pipe shape, and manifolds identify the number of branches.

After clicking the “3D Classification Demo Site” button, you will be directed to the demo page. On this page, you will find a brief explanation of 3D Object Recognition. Below this explanation, there are three button options labeled “Bolt,” “Pipe,” and “Manifold.”

Classification AI

To view the classification classes in this demo, click the “About Shape Recognition (Display Details)” button. This will show you the different classes and their descriptions. The classes for our AI model are custom-defined, meaning we can create any class as long as there are significant differences between them. For example, bolts are classified according to the shape of the bolt head, with the following seven categories:

  • Model 1 – Round Head HExagon Hole
  • Model 2 – Minus
  • Model 3 – Round Head Minus
  • Model 4 – Flat Head Minus
  • Model 5 – Hexagon
  • Model 6 – Hexagon Hole
  • Model 7 – Flat Head Hexagon Hole

3D Classification based on head shape

To experience our demo, follow these steps :

  1. Select a File :
    • in the “– select file –” option, choose one of the unknown 3D bolt models provided. We do not store information about these unknown models.
  2. View the 3D Model:
    • Once selected, the model shape will be displayed below, and the “Execute object shape recognition processing” button will appear
  3. Execute Classification:
    • Click the “Execute Object Shape Recognition Processing” button to run the classification.

The results will appear shortly, showing the AI model’s decision. It will display the top three class probabilities, indicating the confidence level of each classification. A high-quality AI classification product should provide more than 80% certainty in its decisions from the final softmax function.

Our demo can achieve up to 99.5% decision certainty for classification. For example, in the image above, the Bolt_Sample_File_003 is classified as “Minus” with 99.5442% certainty by the AI model.
